Denverite: Caring for Denver, a nonprofit organization funded by Denver sales tax money, will be fully subject to open records laws like any other city agency under a proposed ordinance that cleared a committee vote on Tuesday.

The effort follows a CPR News investigation and a critical Denver Auditor report into Caring for Denver, which collects and spends about $50 million annually for mental health and drug treatment programs. 

Caring for Denver previously refused to provide CPR News with many records related to organizations funded by the nonprofit. It wasn’t until a Caring for Denver board member intervened, that the nonprofit released some records. CPR News and the Denver Auditor found that Caring for Denver did limited due diligence to verify claims in grant applications.
