Opinion: Colorado’s wolf reintroduction howls for more transparency

Glenwood Springs Post Independent: Colorado should make available to the public the real-time and historical wolf location information gathered from the GPS satellite collar of every wolf released in the State, and any progeny collared in the future.

All the wolves released in Colorado, as well as at least one (hopefully two) in every future pack, are/will be collared for GPS Tracking. No doubt the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), as well as key figures in the effort, are monitoring the GPS data from the collars of the 10 wolves released in Colorado so far, even as you read this.

Colorado already has the capability of making wolf-location data available to the public. CPW has a top-notch service called the Colorado Hunting Atlas. (Just Google “Colorado Hunting Atlas.”) The Atlas shows the summer and winter habitats, migration corridors, and overall ranges of Elk, Moose, and numerous other Colorado wildlife species. It’s an exceptional, GPS-based mapping tool I highly recommend for understanding Colorado wildlife. Wolf-location overlays could easily be added, or another service could be developed specifically for wolf reintroduction.
