The Daily Sentinel: Earlier this month, in reporting about a state Court of Appeals ruling that the Aurora City Council violated the state’s open meetings laws, the Sentinel’s Charles Ashby provided examples of similar infractions and near-violations on the Western Slope.

In a similar case a week before the appellate ruling, a Garfield County district court judge ruled the City of Glenwood Springs violated open meetings laws earlier this year by voting to terminate its city manager while it was in an executive session.

In 2019, the Grand Junction City Council came under fire for doing something similar when its members discussed — through private emails — pay raises for its city manager and city attorney. Still, city officials maintained that no violation took place because those raises were part of its then-annual budget, which was discussed and approved at a subsequent open meeting.
