Denver Health staffers allege retaliation for speaking out about pandemic, racism

The Denver Gazette: The association representing employees at Denver Health Medical Center has filed a complaint against the hospital, alleging it retaliated against health care providers who raised concerns about the pandemic and about systemic racism.

The complaint was filed by Denver Health Workers United, a quasi-union representing the hospital’s staffers. It alleges punishment and retaliation against workers who signed an open letter about the pandemic and systemic racism, and it accused the hospital of reprimanding a staffer who spoke to media about COVID-19.

The complaint is the first use of the state’s Public Health Emergency Whistleblower Act, which was enacted in July, said lawyer Valerie Collins, who’s representing the workers. According to a state spokesman, roughly a dozen complaints have been made under the act thus far.
