Sengenberger: Jeffco Public Schools dodges accountability

The Denver Gazette: When Jefferson County Schools fired Chief of Schools David Weiss on Dec. 19, the abrupt action sparked questions — but the truth was darker than anyone imagined.

Weiss, under investigation for possessing child pornography, died by apparent suicide over the holidays. The revelations weren’t just startling; they shattered trust in a district already under strain. The Weiss allegations — coupled with Jeffco’s two-week delay in notifying families, leaving them to learn of it through the news media — have left parents and the community reeling from Jeffco’s failure to meet the moment.

Weiss’ duties included serving as one of two liaisons to Jeffco’s District Accountability Committee, along with Tara Pena, chief of family and community partnerships. At Tuesday’s first committee meeting since Weiss’ termination, tensions were high as members pressed Chief of Staff Lisa Relou on the district’s lackluster response and delayed communication.
