Judge to rule in 1 to 2 weeks on Boulder Valley school closures injunction

Boulder Daily Camera: Following Thursday’s first court hearing in a lawsuit claiming the development of the Boulder Valley School District’s school closures plan violated Colorado’s Open Meetings Law, the judge in the case promised a decision on an injunction request in the next week to two weeks.

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 30 in Boulder County District Court, follows the school board’s 5-2, Sept. 22 vote to close Boulder’s Douglass, Flatirons and Mesa elementary schools and Broomfield’s Birch Elementary in response to continued enrollment declines. The district’s Resilient Schools plan also includes restructuring grade levels at two K-8 schools and relocating two elementary focus schools. The changes are slated to go into effect in fall 2027.

Parents Evan Harvie, Katharine Rosenthal and Theresa Schultz — who are represented by lawyer Eric Maxfield — also filed an emergency motion for a preliminary injunction. The parents represent the three Boulder schools marked for closure.
