District 51, city of Grand Junction settle First Amendment lawsuit brought by parent

The Daily Sentinel: Mesa County Valley School District 51 and the City of Grand Junction have settled a lawsuit brought by a parent alleging D51 personnel violated his right to free speech and peaceful assembly by barring him from district property and filing harassment charges against him.

The suit was filed in June 2023 by Kyle Lewis, who alleged the district prevented Lewis from attending Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings apart from his ex-wife, because as a term of their divorce Lewis and his ex-wife are not allowed to be in the same room.

According to the suit, Lewis wanted to learn about the therapies being provided to his children so he could provide them at home.
