Colorado library fired employee for speaking out about cancellation of Pride event, lawsuit alleges

The Denver Post: A former employee is suing the High Plains Library District in Weld County, alleging she was fired in retaliation for speaking out against the library’s cancellation of a Pride event that she had helped plan in Greeley last year.

Rosa Granado alleges in her lawsuit, filed last week in Weld County District Court, that she lost her job as associate director of public services in 2023 after writing to the district’s board of trustees to express disappointment in the cancellation of the annual LGBTQ Pride event.

This is not the first time the High Plains Library District has been accused of discriminating against vulnerable communities and retaliating against employees who speak out.

In 2023, the library agreed to pay $250,000 to a librarian it fired after she objected to the cancellation of programs for youth of color and LGBTQ teens. Part of that legal settlement with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission also required the district to revise its policies to be more inclusive.
