Chalkbeat Colorado: Two high-profile conservative law firms, including one that has many wins before the U.S. Supreme Court, are helping to defend a Colorado school district in a book banning lawsuit.

Lawyers from Alliance Defending Freedom and the Heritage Foundation filed paperwork to join the legal team representing the Elizabeth School District, which was sued after removing 18 books from its school libraries. The additional legal firepower comes about five months before a December jury trial is set to begin in federal district court.

It’s not clear why the district brought on lawyers from the Heritage Foundation and Alliance Defending Freedom at this point in the case. A statement provided by a district spokesman said that Alliance Defending Freedom has a 20-win record before the U.S. Supreme Court. It also said that the district is the first client of Heritage’s new Legal Action Center, which was created for cases like the library book lawsuit.
