Opinion: Why our public business belongs in the light

Julesburg Advocate: The public’s business is too important to be hidden away. As someone who writes for the Julesburg Advocate, I have seen how important it is for our government to be open. Democracy works best when citizens know how their tax money is being spent, how decisions are made, and why leaders vote the way they do.

However, there is a common problem: the “work session.” Often, boards hold these meetings to talk about big issues before the official, public meeting takes place. While the final decisions might not be made behind closed doors, the important discussions leading up to those decisions have been kept from the public. When that happens, people miss out on the most important parts of the conversation.

Take, for example, the recent discussions about our county’s ambulance service. Commissioners have been exploring four different options to keep the service running, and these choices will impact everyone in our community:
