Judge: CSU acted properly in refusing to release raw video of police shooting

Fort Collins Coloradoan: A district court ruled the Colorado State University Police Department acted properly in declining to release copies of unredacted body camera footage showing police fatally shooting a man in 2017.

Susan Holmes filed a complaint against the university in December 2018, claiming it improperly withheld the footage of her son’s death.

CSU police released a redacted version of the video to the public following the investigation into the shooting.

Fort Collins Police Services and Colorado State University Police officers shot and killed Holmes’ 19-year-old son, Jeremy, on July 1, 2017, after he charged an officer while wielding an 11-inch hunting knife. Officers warned him more than 40 times to drop the knife prior to firing their weapons. According to police body camera footage, Jeremy Holmes said he wanted to die before lunging at officers.
