Editorial: Government transparency is crucial especially during a crisis

Daily Camera (Boulder): The coronavirus has subjected government workers to tremendous strains. Elected leaders have had to make one agonizing decision after another, and staffers throughout every local, state and federal agency have taken on new tasks and work hours. They are getting the public’s business done in a time of crisis, and for that they are to be thanked.

Because it is indeed the public’s business, however, the public retains the expectation that it be done in the open. Transparency at all levels of government in recent weeks has suffered setbacks due to the extraordinary circumstances imposed by the pandemic. But laws that mandate open records and meetings remain in effect, and Americans expect that if by forces beyond their control governments can’t always uphold the letter of sunshine laws they at least fulfill their spirit.
