Denver to face trial over arrest of man recording officers, judge says

Colorado Politics: A jury will decide whether Denver has widespread practices or policies that led officers to unconstitutionally arrest a man for recording and speaking to them, a federal judge ruled last month.

Zachary Manchas was recording and yelling at two Denver officers as they performed a “high-risk” traffic stop of a Volkswagen late one night. Police arrested Manchas for a municipal interference offense. He completed a deferred prosecution agreement and never received a conviction.

Manchas then sued the individual Denver officers for violating his First Amendment rights and for unlawfully arresting and searching him. He also sued Denver, alleging the city’s own actions led to the constitutional violations.
