Audit dings Weld County commissioners over spending, transparency

The Greeley Tribune: Weld County commissioners spent excessively on a training conference, lack transparency in some public meetings and don’t have protections in place for whistleblowers, according to an independent audit into the commissioners’ performance released Tuesday.

Commissioner Chairwoman Julie Cozad and commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer disputed some of the findings, but also committed to considering each of the auditor’s recommendations to see where commissioners can improve.

The audit, conducted by San Francisco-based Harvey M. Rose Associates and at the request of the county’s oversight board, the Weld County Council, looked at the commissioners’ performance since Jan. 1, 2014, and was compiled through a host of interviews and records requests.

The company also audited the Weld County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. Both audits were to be reviewed Tuesday morning by commissioners and Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes.
