By The Associated Press:  A Colorado death-row inmate is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to order a state judge to unseal records from his trial, which remain secret more than five years after he was convicted of murder.

Attorneys for Sir Mario Owens told the Supreme Court that keeping transcripts and other records secret violates his First Amendment rights and keeps him from publicly arguing that prosecutor misconduct led to his conviction.

They also said the secrecy violates the public’s right to monitor the courts.

Owens’ lawyers filed the request for Supreme Court review on Tuesday. It’s unclear when the court will decide whether to take the case.

Owens was convicted and sentenced to die in 2008 in the deaths of Javad Marshall-Fields and his fiancee, Vivian Wolfe. His case is now being appealed.
