Recall petitions filed against Custer County commissioners over closed meetings

The Pueblo Chieftain: Petitions aimed at forcing a recall election for all three Custer County commissioners have been filed with the Custer County Clerk.

A grass-roots, non-partisan committee submitted signed petitions Aug. 14 in an effort to recall Commissioners Bob Kattnig, Donna Hood and Jay Printz, all of whom are Republicans, said Custer County Clerk Kelley Camper.

Camper said she has until Sept. 1 to verify or reject the signatures. The Take Back Custer County Recall Committee needs 470 signatures for Kattnig, 582 signatures for Printz and 735 signatures for Hood to force a recall election.

Camper said potential successor candidates can not start circulating petitions to get onto the ballot until the petitions are verified as complete.

The committee, comprised of Marjorie Ann Barthrop, Marjorie Ann Willson and Mike Haga, all of Westcliffe, alleges the commissioners have violated their oath of office to uphold the Colorado Constitution by holding “closed door, executive sessions and/or secret meetings wherein county issues are discussed and policy decisions made, which are not accessible to the public.”
