Longmont council’s public email experiencing problems

Times-Call (Longmont):  Longmont residents’ ability to read City Council members’ emails in bulk is temporarily on hold as city staff tries to resolve technical and email system issues.

Email messages between elected officials about the public’s business are public records, according to the Colorado Open Records Act. Members of the public can still request specific emails about topics or from a specific day and staff will fill that open records request, Longmont City Clerk Valeria Skitt said.

Previously, Longmont staff had set up a system where members of the public could make an appointment and stop by the city’s records office. There, a staff member would log in to the open records email box, where all City Council emails are supposed to be copied automatically. Emails marked confidential are siphoned off into a separate email box.

But the access to that open records email inbox is on the fritz after the city has experienced continuous network issues and switched email programs. Skitt said the city’s IT department is working to resolve the issue.
