Larimer County Sheriff’s Office encrypts police scanner

Reporter-Herald (Loveland): The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office encrypted its scanner Monday at 8 a.m., becoming the last agency in the area to be fully encrypted.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Moore said that the department used to communicate with other agencies that didn’t have the capability to be encrypted. Now that the surrounded agencies are encrypted, “we felt it was time to encrypt all the channels.”

Moore said that safety and privacy concerns drove the change. Officers sometimes release people’s personal information over the scanner, including addresses and medical conditions. There have also been some instances where suspects have used scanner traffic to monitor how far officers are from a certain area, he said.
