Judge: City of Florence violated Colorado’s Open Meetings Law

Cañon City Daily Record: On Feb. 20, a lawsuit against the City of Florence was closed. The suit was brought by Colorado attorney Matt Roane, and District Court Judge Lynette Wenner subsequently ruled in Roane’s favor.

Roane is based in Pagosa Springs and, according to the lawsuit filed Dec. 15, his law practice, “involves monitoring government meetings and challenging public bodies that fail to comply with Colorado’s Open Meetings Law.”

The lawsuit alleged that the City of Florence violated Colorado’s Open Meetings Law, which details that, due to state policy, public policy business may not be conducted in secret and “must generally gather in meetings that are open to the public.” In limited circumstances, the state authorizes local public bodies to conduct private executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
