Editorial: Sunshine grades

The Daily Sentinel (Grand Junction): Every year in March the American Society of Newspaper Editors promotes Sunshine Week, reminding everyone that government business is supposed to be conducted in the open.

In the spirit of Sunshine Week (March 10-16 this year), we offer our annual assessment of how well local agencies let the sun shine on their actions. They should know that we expect text messages to be included in open records requests — something that rarely happens now.

Law enforcement

The 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office — Nobody does a better of job of complying with sunshine laws than District Attorney Dan Rubinstein and his team of prosecutors.

Because records are so readily available through the DA’s office, other law enforcement agencies are often spared the rigamarole of processing open records requests. As a result, the DA has a sanitizing effect on other law enforcement agencies.
