Editorial: Governor should sign bill to increase openness on highway projects

From Colorado Hometown Weekly:  State lawmakers this spring approved the Transportation Enterprise Transparency Act. This is a bill that reflects the Colorado belief of openess in government. The bill should be signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

As this century unfolds, large and expensive highway and other transportation projects will likely be a big part of the news. These projects will consume vast amounts of public money, as well as funds from private companies, in combined efforts to accomodate the needs of this fast growing state. Private companies, obviously, hope to make money on these projects eventually.

Without these partnerships, officials say, the needed work will simply not be done. This will only result in greater costs and problems down the road for the traveling public and the economy.

Private companies who decide to enter into these projects should understand that because of the major public component involved, financial and operational transparency should be a part of the project.
