Colorado Springs police launch body-camera program

The Gazette (Colorado Springs):  A group of 15 Colorado Springs police officers were expected to don body-worn cameras Tuesday night, effectively ending a two-year process that started after the shootings of unarmed black men across the country.

During the next 30 days, the department will conduct an initial rollout of 65 cameras within the Gold Hill Division, which monitors the city’s southwest side and downtown area. The program is expected to be fully implemented by December, when 475 officers will be equipped with the cameras.

At a press conference Tuesday, Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said the program is an effort to provide an additional layer of transparency and accountability to the department – which received last fall a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Justice Department to assist in purchasing 500 cameras. Colorado Springs police agreed to match the amount to cover the program for the first two years.
