Aurora considers limiting campaign contributions, improving access to metro district information

The Denver Post: Several Aurora City Council members are pressing to limit the size of campaign contributions in that city’s elections as well as give its metro district residents easier access to local campaign information.

Spearheaded by Mayor Pro Tem Nicole Johnston and Councilman Juan Marcano, the proposed changes follow Denver Post stories that showed how metro district developers took advantage of Aurora’s no-limit contributions to pump tens of thousands of dollars into campaigns there.

“We also want the elimination of anonymous contributions, an updated reporting schedule, and stricter penalties for folks who don’t follow reporting requirements,” Marcano told The Post. “I would say all of this is related to what you pointed out in metro district elections and the influence homebuilders and legal firms who deal with metro districts have in municipal elections.”
