ACLU sues Colorado town for barring residents’ yard signs protesting Trump, environmental destruction

The Denver Post: The town of Fraser is “chilling protected speech” by prohibiting residents from displaying political signs protesting President Donald Trump and calling for action on climate change, the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado alleges in a lawsuit filed Thursday.

The ACLU filed the lawsuit as well as a motion to prevent enforcement of the town’s sign code in U.S. District Court in Denver. The lawsuit asks for damages and that the town’s code provisions be declared unconstitutional.

“The town of Fraser has silenced our clients simply because it does not approve of what they have to say or the way in which they choose to say it,” Mark Silverstein, ACLU of Colorado’s legal director, said in a news release. “The Constitution does not allow this kind of government censorship of expression. The town’s sign code is a content-based regulation of speech that violates the First Amendment.”
