Academy school district to provide more information on board agenda items

From The Gazette (Colorado Springs): Parents, teachers and community members now will be able to better understand what’s going on at Academy School District 20’s board of education meetings.

The board decided to make some supporting materials for agenda items available to the public before and during school board meetings, board president Linda Van Matre said Thursday.

“We’re hoping it will make it easier for people who are attending our meetings to follow the conversation,” she said.

In a Jan. 11 Gazette article, some D-20 parents complained that they were concerned about a lack of transparency because the district, like others in the Pikes Peak region, did not provide description of agenda items or backup information about what the board would discuss and vote on during meetings.

Van Matre had told The Gazette that the district was in compliance with the Open Meetings Law, which states, “notice of meeting must be posted at least 24 hours in advance of meeting and the posting shall include specific agenda information where possible.”
