Rockvale residents move to recall town trustees for Sunshine Law violation and other allegations

Daily Record (Canon City): Citing alleged misuse of funds and the wrongful termination of a town employee among a list of complaints, citizens in Rockvale are moving forward with an effort to recall the town’s mayor and board of trustees.

The Rockvale Citizens’ Group said in a news release Wednesday that the board of trustees set a date for a recall election during its Oct. 25 meeting.

Town officials did not confirm that the date had been set — Town Clerk Paula Broadway said she wasn’t sure if it had been scheduled, and referred the Daily Record back to the citizens’ group — but according to the news release, the recall is set for Jan. 16.

Karyn Miller, a former town trustee and a member of the citizens’ group, said it took multiple attempts to submit signed petitions to town officials, who are in charge of seeing the election through.

“It was pull-your-hair-out crazy,” Miller said. “We submitted the petition, and then it got sent back to us, then we resubmitted it again.”

During the process, she said, some of the group’s initial petitions gathered close to 80 signatures. In the group’s final petition, members had about 40 signatures. Miller said the petitions were submitted to Broadway, who referred them to town attorney Dan Slater.
