State of Colorado at fault for omission of deadly Arapahoe High shooting from school violence data

From The Denver Post:  Colorado Department of Education officials said Thursday that the glaring omission of a fatal shooting at Arapahoe High School from campus violence data stemmed from a processing error by the state, not a failure to report by the school district.

State discipline data is supposed to provide the public with a better understanding of school safety, but information released to the media by the education department this week caused an uproar in the Arapahoe community.

The data showed no violent incidents at the Centennial high school in 2013-14, despite a December shooting that left the gunman and senior Claire Davis dead.

“We realize that we mistakenly portrayed Littleton Public Schools as not reporting a tragic event that literally scarred their community and harmed students,” spokeswoman Janelle Asmus said.
