Results of Colorado Springs stadium survey, kept secret for more than a year, finally released

From The Gazette (Colorado Springs):  Residents did not want the east side Sky Sox baseball stadium to move downtown, according to the results of a community survey ordered in May 2013 by Mayor Steve Bach.

The results of the survey, kept secret for more than one year, were released by Bach Thursday after The Gazette asked for the survey results four times under the Colorado Open Records Act.

The $35,000 taxpayer-funded survey was sent to 103,317 season ticket holders of Colorado College, the membership of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, the email list of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and the email list of the World Arena; 7,164 surveys were returned.

A downtown baseball stadium was part of the original City for Champions plan. A former spokesman for the city said in May 2013 that the survey was intended to gauge “preliminary interest in a possible downtown, multi-purpose stadium” that would serve as a homefor the Sky Sox and other events.

Bach did not release the entire report. The released report begins on page 36. A news release about the survey results said, “Other portions of the report, “Financial Analysis of a Proposed Downtown Ballpark for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox,” are not public records subject to disclosure, and are proprietary to the local Triple A baseball franchise.”
