From The Pueblo Chieftain: It was appropriately cold and snowing outside as City Council decided Monday night to set the special recall election for Councilwoman Ami Nawrocki for Jan. 27.
Not that council had any choice. City Attorney Dan Kogovsek explained there were sufficient voter signatures on the recall petitions to require council to call a special election for the District 1 councilwoman.
Nawrocki recused herself from the vote on setting the date but sitting in the audience were Frank and Becky Cortese, owners of C&C Disposal. They led the local trash haulers in carrying the recall petitions against Nawrocki and former Council President Sandy Daff, who resigned Oct. 31.
Essentially, the haulers targeted the two councilwomen for pushing the city to hire an outside consultant to design a new city enterprise to oversee trash collection — a step vigorously opposed by local haulers.
Published emails between the councilwomen and former Councilman Chris Kaufman, who resigned in August, indicated they wanted to get the consultant hired before local haulers could block that with a ballot measure.
