Pueblo City Council member quits after criticism over emails

From The Pueblo Chieftain: City Councilman Chris Kaufman resigned his at-large seat Tuesday, one day after he sat through a long dressing-down from city residents who came to Monday’s council meeting angry about emails between Kaufman, two other council members and a Pueblo County official.

Kaufman’s sudden decision means council will have to appoint a replacement. He was in his second term on council.

In a letter to the city dated Tuesday, Kaufman bristled at charges from the crowd at Monday’s meeting that emails he took part in were “racist” by denigrating local trash companies.

He also faulted The Pueblo Chieftain’s reporting on the council emails, saying the newspaper had devoted “10 days straight to this smear.”

The audience at Monday’s meeting as well as some council colleagues saw it differently.

Councilman Chris Nicoll said the emails showed the trio were engaged in a kind of “shadow government” and were planning city policy without the other council members.
