Police sergeant receives ‘verbal counseling’ for failing to use body camera while investigating new chief

9NEWS: 9NEWS Investigates has obtained a report in which a police sergeant claims he forgot to turn on his body worn camera while responding to the home of the city’s new chief of police during the investigation of a weapon discharge.

On May 14, Jim Baird, who was two weeks out from being sworn in as Thornton’s new chief, fired his duty weapon in his kitchen while using the phone. The bullet partially penetrated a neighbor’s kitchen wall.

In an interview with 9NEWS in May, Baird admitted he was negligent.

Baird called the Thornton Police Department to report the incident, prompting Sergeant William Husk to respond to Baird’s apartment. Husk failed to turn on his body worn camera as required by city policy and state law.
