Plan to share draft audits raises Sunshine Law questions for Weld County Council

The Greeley Tribune: The long-awaited audits of the Weld County commissioners and Weld County Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be released Aug. 21, the Weld County Council agreed during its Monday meeting.

But a planned meeting a week before that release has raised questions.

County Council members agreed to present a draft audit to Weld County commissioners and Weld County Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes for fact checking before releasing the audit to the public.

It’s unclear how the draft audit will be presented outside of public view, but County Attorney Bruce Barker said he would check the necessary exemptions for an executive session — a private meeting between council members, commissioners and the clerk. Commissioners and Koppes requested the prior review during a work session this past spring.

First, Council Chairman Brett Abernathy said the council would host a work session with commissioners and the clerk, then go into executive session from the work session. But Colorado Open Meetings Act allow for an executive session only during a regular or special meeting — not a work session.
