News outlets seek release of documents in Planned Parenthood shooting

From The Gazette (Colorado Springs):  The Gazette and other news organizations are asking a judge to unseal details of the case against the accused Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooter.

Attorney Steven Zansberg, representing The Gazette, The Associated Press and other media outlets, made the request Thursday afternoon in a court filing. He said there is no basis to keep arrest and search warrants for Robert Lewis Dear Jr. sealed more than two weeks after the Nov. 27 shooting in Colorado Springs, which killed three and wounded nine others.

Zansberg said petitioners would like the motion to unseal the documents to be heard before Dear’s review hearing at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“The Media Petitioners’ motion asks the court to address the unsealing request at its earliest opportunity,” Zansberg said.

Prosecutors have charged Dear, 57, with 179 counts of crimes including first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault. During a recent court appearance, Dear declared himself “a warrior for the babies” and said he was guilty. His public defender raised doubts about his competency after his repeated outbursts in court.

Authorities have released few details about the case. Zansberg said courts have unsealed records in other high-profile mass shootings.
