Telluride Daily Planet: Mountain Village voters have six questions on their June ballots, though Question No. 6 could be postponed to the November ballot, pending a vote at Town Council’s June 18 meeting. Question No. 1, regarding voter qualifications of non-natural persons, has gotten the bulk of the attention, with the remaining four questions often mischaracterized as “housekeeping” or “administrative” questions, addressing clerical inconsistencies between the town’s charter, local ordinances, and state statutes.
Question No. 3, however, regarding publication of ordinances and public notice on the town website, should not be considered housekeeping. A YES vote on the measure would contradict state law requiring municipalities to publish such notices in the newspaper of record. It would make Mountain Village a rare exception among the more than 300 municipalities and counties in Colorado, only a few of which have taken action to avoid publishing in newspapers, according to the Colorado Press Association (CPA).
The question reads, in full, “Shall Section 5.9 of the Town of Mountain Village Home Rule Charter be amended to authorize publication of ordinances and public notices via the Town’s official website rather than a newspaper?”
