Jury selection for Aurora theater shooting trial to remain open to public

From The Denver Post:  The public will be able to watch jury selection for the Aurora movie theater murder trial, after a judge denied a request from both prosecutors and defense attorneys to close the proceedings.

Attorneys on both sides argued that open jury selection would hurt the trial’s fairness, possibly by causing potential jurors to change their answers to questions about their biases. In an order issued Wednesday, Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour ruled that there is no reason to believe the press or the public would intimidate prospective jurors.

For one, Samour wrote that members of the public and media will not be allowed in the courtroom during jury selection but will instead watch the process on closed-circuit television. The names of prospective jurors will also be kept secret, Samour wrote. And jurors will first fill out lengthy questionnaires — which won’t be made public — prior to being called back for questioning.
