Henson: Yes, we are the enemy of people who …

The Pueblo Chieftain: Many members of the media are upset about President Trump’s repeated comments that the media is the “enemy of the people.”

I want to give the president the benefit of the doubt. I think he meant to say, “. . . enemy of the people WHO. . . .”

Because that would make sense. For example, in my modest little career in mid-sized Pueblo, Colo., I’ve been fortunate to be part of a media organization that has been the “enemy of the people who. . . .”

Were elected officials who refused to follow the Colorado Open Meetings Law and discussed all sorts of sensitive topics — but not topics allowed by the law — in secret behind closed doors.

Were members of organized crime who spread their tentacles throughout the Pueblo Police Department through rigged civil service tests; and who tried to intimidate elected officials by threats of violence, threats that included a planned but foiled hit on a county commissioner.

Were law enforcement officers who treated their department’s evidence room as their personal shopping center.

Were on government boards and decided in executive session — aka, secret, closed-door meetings — to hire a city manager, a school superintendent, a university system chief, all in violation of state rules.
