Editorial: An open process for Jeffco schools

From The Denver Post:  Releasing a draft contract for Jefferson County schools’ soon-to-be-hired superintendent is a good move that promotes transparency.

We’re glad to see the district’s board has assented to community calls for details about the expected hiring of Daniel McMinimee.

And we hope the rest of the process honors the idea that interested community members should have the chance to fully examine the deal and offer opinions to the five-member school board.

The draft contract is fairly unremarkable, although the $280,000 base salary seems somewhat high compared to similar positions in the region. And why is the contract for five years? What if voters install new board members before then who want a fresh start? They’d be on the hook, the contract says, for a year’s pay.

Since school board elections in November brought a new majority to the Jeffco board, there has been quite a bit of controversy about its direction. The three members who control the board ran as a slate and have pledged change.
