The Fort Morgan Times: It’s unfortunate that one of the first actions of the newly organized Fort Morgan City Council appears to have been a violation of Colorado’s open meeting laws.
The council voted at their Jan. 20 meeting to go behind closed doors to get advice from their attorney and discuss possible positions for negotiation of the city’s contract with the Fort Morgan Humane Society. Such discussion is allowed, but all signs point to the council going beyond simple discussion.
Just days later, the Humane Society received a 60-day notice that their contract is being terminated. There is no indication that the council returned to open session to vote on that action; instead, we’ve been told the council simply announced that staff had been directed to terminate the contract.
