Colorado legislators want parents to get clearer idea of school safety

From The Denver Post:  Colorado’s flawed system for reporting incidents of violence and discipline in schools will face close scrutiny during the legislative session that begins Wednesday.

Schools would be required to report sexual assaults and marijuana use under proposed bipartisan legislation aimed at offering parents a clearer picture of safety. Legislators also are trying to fix the often-ignored state law that requires law enforcement agencies to report violent incidents involving students.

The proposed legislation, which is still being crafted and could result in several bills, marks a starting point for lawmakers who spent months meeting with educators and law enforcement officials in response to an investigation by The Denver Post and KMGH-Channel 7 in May.

State Sen. Linda Newell, D-Littleton, and state Rep. Polly Lawrence, R-Douglas County, said the measures would offer more transparent reporting on school violence and discipline while also continuing efforts to curb the number of students who end up in the criminal justice system for minor violations.

“We need to have a clearer reporting system for school safety,” Lawrence said. “I’m looking at this from the perspective of a parent as to I want to know. What’s going on in a school? How are these different schools handling it?”
