From The Pueblo Chieftain: The Pueblo Chieftain is asking Pueblo Chief District Judge Deborah Eyler to review the records of City Council’s executive sessions to determine if council has violated the state’s open meetings law in discussing the city’s half-cent tax for job recruitment.
The letter from Managing Editor Steve Henson notes that state law requires that a recording of all council executive sessions is required by law so that any challenge to what was discussed can be reviewed.
Council is strictly limited in what it can discuss in executive session and Councilman Chris Nicoll charged last week that his colleagues had broken that law on several occasions by discussing how to change the use of the half-cent tax so that a portion of the $40 million fund could be spent on city improvements.
Council President Sandy Daff and Councilman Chris Kaufman have defended those meetings as sanctioned by City Attorney Dan Kogovsek.
