CDOC halts parole risk data access after 9NEWS Investigates highlights ‘unacceptable’ assessment errors with risk scores

9NEWS: Not long after the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) admitted 9NEWS Investigates had uncovered an “unacceptable” problem within the way it gauges the risk levels of the state’s 8,000 parolees, CDOC shut off the public’s access to the very documents 9NEWS Investigates used to discover the problem in the first place.

Citing “copyright protections,” CDOC said it will no longer supply risk assessments or risk assessment scores requested under Colorado open records laws.

Since the start of 2025, 9NEWS had requested and received dozens of risk assessments and risk scores. The subsequent investigation was first to discover routine and systemic errors on the risk scores of dozens of parolees now accused of or convicted of high-profile and often violent crimes.
