Aspen council open to posting emails online to public

Aspen Daily News: The municipal government will seek to archive and regularly publish all Aspen City Council members’ emails on a public online portal after receiving council support for the measure during a work session on Monday.

“All of our emails we should consider as postcards that are available for everyone to read,” Councilman Ward Hauenstein said during the work session.

City Manager Sara Ott said that a portal could allow city staff to spend less time responding to open records requests and boost the city’s transparency. Already, the city has received over 70 open records requests from members of the public this year, according to staff comments during the work session. Two of these requests involved council members’ communications.
