Superior won’t post official town emails online, citing deterrent concerns

Daily Camera (Boulder): Superior leaders this week said they wouldn’t direct staff to take steps toward regularly posting official town emails to its website, eschewing a standard taken by a handful of Front Range communities and even some Boulder County neighbors.

The process — one typically utilized through a variety of software programs that push almost all email exchanges between constituents and town officials (and sometimes those amongst each other) to a specific online portal for automatic public viewing — isn’t the norm quite yet, but transparency advocates say a growing number of communities in recent years have leaned toward implementing them in favor of making residents go through an often onerous open records request process.

“Nationally there is a push for more transparency in government,” Trustee Laura Skladzinski, one of two proponents in Superior’s leadership for allowing the option, said this week, “and I would really like to see Superior — not even taking the lead because we’ve seen a number of neighboring municipalities already doing this — but I think it’s important for us to be a leader in both access and in citizen engagement.”
