Editorial: Visit Estes Park board continues to struggle with transparency

Estes Park Trail-Gazette: Over the last month this paper has published several articles and opinion pieces regarding the marketing arm of this community – Visit Estes Park (VEP). It’s safe to say with several board members calling for each other’s resignations at public meetings, and another controversial board appointee stepping down, that the situation within the Board itself has reached a point of seriousness that affects the operational ability of the entire organization.

Now, with serious accusations being leveled at members of the board and the CEO herself, we suggest it would be helpful to remember how we arrived at this situation. And where we might go from here.

As we’ve seen recently with the Park Hospital District Board of Directors, a board that is divided internally and is under scrutiny publicly cannot effectively provide the policy governance required of it. As readers will recall, we editorialized on this issue, and did so more than once.

The Visit Estes Park Board of Directors has been in more or less constant turmoil since the fall of 2015. At that time the County Commissioners were considering filling a vacant position on the VEP board, with the choice coming down to local residents David Batey and Morgan Mulch.
