Editorial: Commissioner’s Hillary impersonation is disappointing, but not surprising

The Greeley Tribune: Less than a week after The Tribune published a story documenting a number of phone calls between Sean Conway and a couple members of the county’s oversight board under questionable circumstances, Conway responded with his best Hillary Clinton impersonation.

Without much explanation, he began using a private email account and phone number to conduct public business, instead of the taxpayer-funded communications lines his colleagues use.

This move may violate county code. It certainly violates the norms of good governance.

“It’s a bad practice,” said Jeff Roberts, Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition executive director. “I think it makes it harder (to get open records requests).”

The reason it’s harder, Roberts said, is because Conway becomes the custodian of records rather than the county, so there is less structure in place to ensure compliance.

“The big thing everybody knows about is Hillary Clinton using a private email as secretary of state,” Roberts said. “It’s much easier; it’s much more transparent when public officials use the email services of the government they’re working for or representing.”
